SUMMARY:Herrett Forum presents: Sixty Years of Studying Golden Eagles in SW Idaho: What Have We Learned?
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, February 10 | 6:30pm \nCost: Free \nTime: 6:30pm \nLocation: Rick Allen Room in the Herrett Center\, Twin Falls\, ID \nThis upcoming Herrett Forum Lecture will offer a rare\, long-term look at one of Southwestern Idaho’s most iconic raptors. Scientist emeritus Mike Kochert will share his findings from golden eagle nesting studies that have continued uninterrupted since 1966 – one of the longest-running raptor research efforts in the world. Mike’s talk will explore golden eagle biology\, eagle-prey-habitat relationships\, and how nesting populations have responded to more than 45 years of dramatic habitat and environmental change. \nDrawing on 55 years of fieldwork in the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area\, Mike will connect these scientific findings to real-world conservation challenges faced by land and wildlife managers today. He will also reflect on his personal experiences from half a century spent studying golden eagles and helping establish the scientific foundation for the NCA. \nTo complement the lecture\, the Herrett Center will have on display a variety of eggs from our natural history collections\, giving you a unique opportunity to see these remarkable artifacts up close. \nThis Herrett Forum Lecture will take place on February 10\, at 6:30 PM. This event is free to attend. \nMike’s lecture is just the kickoff to the second half of this season’s lectures. Mark your calendars for: \n\n“When Strategy Met Opportunity: Women’s Suffrage in Idaho\,” presented by Dr. Samra Culum-Williams on March 17.\n“Growth and Identity: How Migration is Reshaping Idaho\,” presented by Dr. Jaap Vos on April 14.\n“Surviving El Milagro: Stories from a Southern Idaho Labor City\,” presented by Russ Tremayne on May 12.

SUMMARY:Herrett Forum presents: How Girls and Boys View Politics Differently and Why It Matters
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, March 11\, 2025 \nCost: Free \nDoors open: 7:00pm | Presentation starts 7:30pm \nLocation: Rick Allen Room in the Herrett Center\, Twin Falls\, ID \nHow Girls and Boys View Politics Differently and Why It Matters\nKids’ early experiences and perceptions politics and political leadership influence their future interest and participation in the political world. In this presentation\, I will share data from 1\,600 kids ages 6-12 that helps us understand how kids view politics and political leadership. The data demonstrate that through gendered political socialization\, kids are socialized both to gender roles and to politics as a masculine space\, which can result in girls retreating from political interest and engagement. This highlights the need for increased attention to and intervention to address this challenge such as through providing more female political role models to kids. \n  \nAbout the Presenter\nDr. Angie Bos is Professor and Dean of the School of Public Service at Boise State University. Prior to this she spent 15 years as Professor of Political Science at the College of Wooster where she also served as Associate Dean for Experiential Learning and as Chair of the Department of Political Science. Dr. Bos’ career has centered on creating transformative learning experiences for students and helping prepare them for careers in public service. \nDr. Bos has a strong record of publishing research on gender and political leadership and creating public-facing scholarship to improve women’s representation in our public institutions. Part of her research examines the gendered aspects of how kids view political leadership\, and how that impacts especially girls’ political engagement and interest. Bos’ research is published in journals such as the American Political Science Review\, Political Psychology\, and Political Communication. \nBos earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science at the University of Minnesota-Morris and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

SUMMARY:Herrett Forum presents: Navigating the Changing Landscape of Public Libraries
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, February 11\, 2025 \nCost: Free \nDoors open: 7:00pm | Presentation starts 7:30pm \nLocation: Rick Allen Room in the Herrett Center\, Twin Falls\, ID \nNavigating the Changing Landscape of Public Libraries in Idaho\nPublic Libraries serve a mission to provide resources to all community members. A national movement to restrict access to certain media in public libraries has come to Idaho. A new state law requires libraries to move materials considered harmful to minors or risk a lawsuit. Many community members support this law\, as well as future restrictions. Others champion the freedom of access to materials\, regardless of personal opinions. Charged with the daunting task of following the new library law\, how are public libraries navigating this new landscape?
